Dishwasher Do’s and Don’ts

The dishwasher is an incredible invention that you would have to agree, we tend to take for granted. A good measure of this is the fact we often turn it on before it is full, whilst some countries around the world don’t even have access to this kind of technology, or clean running water.

Dating as far back as the late 1800s, the dishwasher is an American invention that started off as a wooden box with a handheld stick that splashed water on the dishes. Once the use of electricity became widespread, dishwashers evolved and became a household staple across America in the 1950s.

Today, we don’t even stop to think about the time we save by having our dishes washed for us. Gone are the days of rubber gloves, drain plugs and that dreaded role play of, “You wash, I’ll dry”.

Despite being an almighty savior, the resilient dishwasher is not entirely invulnerable. Like most things, a little bit of TLC goes a long way and can really extend the lifespan of your appliance. Follow this list of do’s and don’t to ensure your dishwasher serves you for a lifetime.

Dishwasher Do’s

  • Rinse your dishes before stacking them in the dishwasher. This will prevent food from hardening and get stuck on surfaces, and avoid large bits of food from getting stuck in the drain.
  • Place cutlery upwards so that the ends of your knives, forks, and spoons can be washed properly.
  • Always use provided glass racks to wash your glassware and avoid breakage.
  • Place containers, cups, and bowls face down to ensure no dirty water remains inside.
  • Place large utensils like spatulas and cooking spoons on the top rack to ensure they are cleaned properly.
  • Remember to clean your dishwasher drain filter regularly.

Dishwasher Don’ts

  • Don’t place stainless steel chefs knives in the dishwasher as it can blunt and chip the blades.
  • Don’t place pots in the dishwasher unless their cookware instructions say it is safe to do so. The heat and water may ruin non-stick surfaces.
  • Don’t place wooden utensils and chopping boards in the dishwasher as they are porous and take a long time to dry once soaked through. This may cause them to rot and grow mold.
  • Don’t over-stack your dishwasher as crockery and cutlery won’t wash properly.
  • Don’t place crystal glass in the dishwasher as it shatters in the heat.
  • Don’t forget to be grateful for this luxurious invention!
